Archive for June, 2010

I began this project in hopes of collecting all of the wisdom I had received over the past couple of years and putting it in one place. Storing it on my blog for me to look back at  one day. Sharing it with other lost 20 year old girls to help them find their way. (All 20 year old girls are lost am I right?)
Last week I received an email from a fascinating woman who created a collection of letters from celebrities and successful women across the country. Ellyn has had a fascinating career and was a real pioneer in encouraging women to help other women.  She began this concept when she collaborated with famous women and collected five letters to my younger self for an article in O, The Oprah Magazine back in 2003. As I thumbed through her website I was amazed at the women she had worked with. The superstars that had created some of these letters. Tell me there isn’t a thing or two Suzie Orman could teach your younger self.  Or what about the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Ambassador Nancy Brinker. These book are filled with wisdom from journalists, executives, and movie stars alike.
On top of that Ellyn has started to host 50 letters to my younger self parties. How therapeutic and fun would it be to gather with some of your closest friends, meet the author, and draft your letter together?
I will be graduating college next December and I cannot tell you how much valuable advice is found over on her blog. Ellyn’s books seem like the perfect gift for any new college grad. They are available Here and Here as well as all other book stores.

Moments.

Life is made up of moments. Some moments are special and a time for reflection. Other moments are scary and many moments are sad.

Everyonce in a while you have a big moment. A moment in which something happens that changes your life forever. You get married or have a baby. You graduate college or buy a house.

These are life changing moments. Moments you work towards. You plan your wedding and prepare for your baby. You work hard through school and look at a dozen houses before putting a bid in. You build yourself up for these moments and then relish in your success when they happen.

Few times in your life do you have big moments that weren’t planned. Somethings just happen that is life changing but it happended so fast that you have to stop. And reflect.

I was sitting in class secretly checking my email when I found out I made New York Times.com. I was sitting in front of my computer in my pajamas sporting un-washed hair when I was asked to be interviewed on NPR. These are huge moments. Moments I never planned. Moments that came and went so quickly that I am still sitting here awe struck. Pinching myself and waiting to wake up.

Take a listen.
