Growing You Career–Digital vs. Traditional

By cassie

In the past year I have learned more than I can begin to explain about building your career. I have met some amazing people and acquired some amazing mentors.

(and by acquire I mean Twitter stalking–leaving these poor people with no choice but  to address me)

Last week I had a lovely conversation about where I am headed in the future. She was a pleasure to speak to and gave me some great advice. One of the things that she suggested I do is get some experience in Traditional Media.

I have been stuck on this idea for the rest of the week. I had always planned on using my digital media background and simply building upon it. Is this to naive? Is it essential to have both traditional and digital experience? Is it better to choose an area or niche and carve a defined place for yourself?

I know that many people are working their way into digital media. I realize that the number of people working to get into the field will continue to grow. So maybe traditional media is the way to go?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

In my opinion, it’s important to have a deep understanding of all aspects of the industry, and within that, find your expertise.

I currently work in digital media, but I found internships with traditional media really helpful and beneficial. It’s always good to have an understanding of how things work from the other side, and most campaigns use an integrated approach of both digital and traditional media. Just as people who work in traditional media should know what twitter/FB are all about and perhaps use them, the same goes for people who work in the digital space. At the end of the day, any experience will help rather than hinder.

I stumbled across your post on Twitter (of course!) and I found it interesting because I often find myself wondering the same thing. But, at the end of the day, experience in both traditional and digital careers is ideal.

We’re already starting to see numerous companies incorporate social media platforms into their traditional marketing campaigns, so having an understanding of both will only serve to enhance your experience as a professional.

For a while, I was unsure how I could continue learning about traditional PR since my job is with a digital PR and marketing agency. Interestingly, I turned to blogs and Twitter to find case studies, conversations, and articles about offline campaigns. I try to stay aware of what’s taking place in both sides, because eventually the two will be more integrated that what we’re currently seeing.

I agree with the previous commenters. In addition, well-developed experience in a variety of media will help prevent you from looking like one of those “digital and social media guru ninja” scammers. Additional education/experience in these fields will add levity to your resume.

Whoever told you that is wonderful.

Yes, you need traditional media. I don’t even understand PR but I know that Ashton Kutcher has 4 million followers on twitter, and it’s not because he’s so awesome on twitter.

MSM matters and someone was very kind to remind you of that.
